Registration Duties for Teachers

Teachers should plan to set aside at least part of the first day of class to deal with registration and other administrative duties associated with the course. After receiving feedback from teachers, we have decided to break the link for students access to the drop/add/withdrawal system this will prevent students from being able to withdraw from the class after the course has begun unless they have permission from the teacher. Students requesting to withdraw from a course must speak with their teacher who in turn will discuss the matter with the professor. An e-mail must be sent to the College Now director by a teacher or high school liaison with the students ID, course, and date of withdrawal by the deadline.

Student Privacy

Pursuant to federal law, College Now students are protected under the FAMILY EDUCATIONAL RIGHTS AND PRIVACY ACT (FERPA). What does that mean for professors, teachers, or high school administrators? Basically, we are not allowed to discuss grades, conduct, or anything else specific to a student with anyone but that student, even if they are under 18. That means if a parent calls and asks about the grades of their child we are not allowed (by federal mandate) to talk to them about their daughter/son. A few important notes about this:

  1. It is permissible to talk with parents about general procedures and non-specific types of information.
  2. High schools teachers and administrators can still discuss the high school portion of the class, as they would normally.

By selecting the "FERPA" button below, you can view the actual mandate.
