Application Process

RN to BSN Program Admission Criteria

  • Current, unencumbered RN License (Associate degree nursing students may apply in the last semester of their nursing program, with acceptance into the program contingent upon successful completion of the NCLEX-RN exam.  The NCLEX-RN exam must be successfully completed by July 15 for enrollment in the fall semester, and by November 15 for enrollment in the spring semester.  Nursing students graduating in November or December, with NCLEX-RN exam results unavailable until after November 15, may contact the Department of Nursing to develop individualized entry plans for spring semester.)
  • Nursing GPA > 2.75
  • Must be admitted to Southwest Minnesota State University*  Click here to apply to SMSU.

* Courses start in the Fall or Spring. Fall semesters begin in August. Spring semesters begin in January.

How to Apply

When you are ready to apply, please follow these steps for full acceptance into the RN to BSN Program:

1. SMSU Admission Application

  • First, you must apply to SMSU for general admission (Click here to apply to SMSU.)
  • Have your official transcripts sent to the SMSU Admission office.

2. SMSU RN to BSN Program Application

  • Once accepted to SMSU, the student will receive instructions from the Department of Nursing to complete the RN to BSN Program application. Click here to apply to the RN to BSN Program.

Prior to acceptance into the RN to BSN Program, students will need to supply SMSU with the following documentation (Applicants are encouraged to keep the original documents of their health history form and immunizations, as federal law prohibits Southwest Minnesota State University from providing a copy of the documents to a student.):

  • Health History Form (Immunization record)
  • Current CPR certification
  • Successful Completion of a Background Check

Completion of RN to BSN Program application along with completion of program requirements (application expires one year from completion date)
