Delegate FAQ

FAQ about Delegates:

What is a delegate? A delegate serves as the official representative of a higher education institution or learned society. The tradition of visiting delegates marching in procession adds color and prestige to the inauguration ceremony. You may be an alumnus/a of the institution, a current employee of the institution, or a member of a learned society.

How many delegates does an institution have? Each institution appoints only one person to represent it in the inauguration. Often, the delegate is the institution's president. In the event the president cannot attend, a representative is appointed to attend on the president's behalf. This is why it is important to contact the office of the president at your institution for official appointment as the delegate.

Can I be a delegate? Anyone is eligible to be a delegate but not everyone can be appointed be a delegate. If you are an alumnus/a of SMSU, you may not be a delegate to represent SMSU, but if you hold an advanced degree from another institution, you may serve as the delegate representative for that institution by appointment of the institution's president. If you did not graduate from SMSU and received a degree from another university, you may serve as the delegate representative for your alma mater by appointment of the institution's president. If you are an employee of a higher education institution, you may represent that institution by appointment of the institution's president. If you are both an alumnus/a and employee in higher education, the choice of the institution you would represent is yours, but you must contact the institution's office of the president to obtain your appointment as the official delegate. If you are faculty member at SMSU, you may elect to contact your alma mater to serve as the official delegate for that institution OR you may choose to participate in the faculty processional.

What if I am not a delegate? If a delegate appointment has already been made for the institution you hoped to represent, please plan to attend the inauguration ceremony in general seating. The inauguration is open to the public and will be a unique opportunity for anyone affiliated with Southwest Minnesota State University to witness and celebrate the inauguration of our ninth permanent president.

What if I am SMSU Faculty? If you are a faculty member at SMSU, it is up to you to contact your alma mater to serve as the official delegate for that institution OR you may elect to participate in the SMSU faculty processional. Contact the IFO for more information about the faculty processional at the Inauguration.
