About Doug Johnson, photographer

Born in Green Bay, Wisconsin; received a B.A. in studio arts, Southwest Minnesota State University. As a student I was primarily a painter but later concentrated on creative writing, publishing poems in the little mags for many years.  More recently I returned to visual work, first mixed media on paper and then photography.  I consider the work in these various genres to be portions of the same endeavor, with the poems containing visual or painterly elements and the photographs suggesting traces of poetry.

I enjoy the active nature of photography, the pleasures of the hunt for the image. My recent work involves cityscapes or street scenes in which I’m fascinated with the interplay of natural and artificial light, reflections, and the juxtaposition of structural and free-flowing elements. Lately I’ve noticed that human figures are appearing more frequently in these images, not as portraiture, but indistinct and sometimes tiny yet conveying an outsized surge of energy.  I love the way light bounces around inside a city.
