First Things First - Getting Started

Congratulations on being accepted into a Graduate Program at Southwest Minnesota State University! But what do you do now? Here is a simple list of things to do to be one step closer to that Graduate Education.

  1. Check out the Academic Calendar that includes important dates.
  2. Complete the FAFSA and then fill out the Financial Aid form. If you are Master's of Education or Special Ed and are interested in grants, look over the TEACH Grant and Teacher Loan Forgiveness Program information sheets and apply if you qualify.
  3. Look at the Frequently Asked Questions for any similar questions you may have.
  4. Activate your Star ID.
  5. Register for your classes by logging into E-services. You will need  your Star ID for this process.
  6. Activate your SMSU Email because this will be the main source of communication from SMSU and professors.
  7. If you are an off-campus student, you will need to sign on to the SMSU network.
  8. If you are an on-campus student, it is required to complete the Immunization Record Form.
  9. When its time for you to buy your books, make sure to search for your classes at the bookstore website.  If you are part of a Learning Community, contact your facilitator about your books.
  10. Get familiar with D2L Brightspace (Desire to Learn) because often times professors post important information on this site.
  11. If you are a new on-campus student, make sure you pick up your Student ID Card in the Student Center. If you are an off campus student taking classes from a distance, feel free to send a jpeg attached picture to mustangcard@smsu.edu, through your SMSU email, to receive your student ID card.
  12. Please take the time to review the Policies and Procedures at SMSU.  The School of Graduate Studies policies and procedures can be found in more detail by clicking on  A-045 document.

If you have any other questions, don't hesitate to contact the School of Graduate Studies
