The Center for Rural and Regional Studies once
again has fellows.
Rural and Regional Fellowships
Rural and Regional Fellows are chosen from the whole range
of natural, social, and historical sciences, as well as from
economics, business, or agronomy. Fellows are selected on the
basis of their projected research and the likelihood that their
completed research will result in useful knowledge, stimulate
fresh approaches to regional studies, and prove worthy of eventual
publication. The fellows program supports researchers exploring
any of a broad range of topics related to southwestern Minnesota,
the upper Midwest, and the northern prairie. Possible candidates
include graduate students with thesis topics or chapters relevant
to the Center's mission, as well as post-doctorates or independent
scholars pursuing similar research. Fellows receive a monthly
stipend of $2,500 for each month in residence, for a maximum
of four months. The program provides a $500 bonus to fellows
who produce significant work meriting publication. The maximum
stipend is $10,500 for a four-month tenure and production of
significant scholarly work. During their research tenure, Fellows
also have access to moderate research funds.

The Past Rural and Regional Fellows Program
From April 2000 to May 2003, the Center for Rural and Regional
Studies provided visiting scholars with funding and research
support at Southwest Minnesota State University (SMSU). The
Center hosted researchers exploring a variety of topics related
to southwestern Minnesota, the upper Midwest, and the northern
prairie. The fellows in residence were chosen biannually from
the range of natural, social, and historical sciences. Those
selected for the program included graduate students with thesis
topics and chapters relevant to the Center's mission, as well
as post-doctorates and independent scholars pursuing similar
research. While at SMSU, they spent up to four months in residence
and receive semester stipends of up to $7,500. During their
research tenure, they conducted environmental, demographic,
social, and cultural research. They presented public lectures
on their intended course of study, produced significant written
work, and organized special topics seminars. They also participated
in the Center's ongoing activities and consulted with the faculty.
