Dr. Dwight C. Watson, Dean of the College of Education at the University of Northern Iowa, Cedar Falls, Iowa, has been named Provost and Vice President for Academic and Student Affairs at Southwest Minnesota State University.

He begins his duties at SMSU on July 1.

Watson has been Dean of the College of Education at UNI since 2010. Prior to that, he spent four years at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire as Associate Dean of the Teacher Education program and department chair.

He has past experience at Hamline University in St. Paul, where he was interim director for the Center for Excellence in Urban Teaching, and chair of the Department of Education.

He received an Associate of Arts degree Liberal Arts Education from the University of South Carolina, Sumter; a Bachelor of Arts in Elementary Education from the University of South Carolina, Columbia; a master’s in Elementary Education from the University of South Carolina, Columbia; and a Doctorate of Education in Curriculum and Instruction from North Carolina State University, Raleigh, N.C.

He has a broad background in grant writing and fundraising, and has been active in professional, academic and community service throughout his career.

“I am very excited to come to Marshall to make it my professional and personal home, and I’m excited for the opportunity to work at SMSU because I believe it is an institution that focuses on connecting with learners. As a former teacher, that is something I’ve built my career on,” said Watson.

“I really look forward to having Dr. Watson join the university in this important leadership role,” said President Connie J. Gores. “Dr. Watson is committed to building partnerships both on campus and off, and his commitment to academic excellence and student learning and success will help move the university forward in a positive direction. I am delighted that he is joining the SMSU family.”
