‘We Are Mustangs’ Homecoming Sept. 21-27

SMSU alumni from the region and across the country will return to campus Sept. 21-27 to celebrate “We Are Mustangs,” the theme of the 2015 Southwest Minnesota State University Homecoming.

Numerous events will be held during the week leading up to Homecoming, including movies, live entertainment, coronation, residence hall decorating and karaoke.

Homecoming king and queen coronation is at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 24 in the Conference Center Lower Ballroom.

Four alumni and one community member will receive Alumni Association awards at the Friday, Sept. 25 noon luncheon in the Conference Center Ballroom.

Alumni Achievement Award honorees include Steve Baumann, ’74, President and Owner of Vexilar, a marine electronics company know as the “Cadillac” of the ice fishing world; Gene,’71, and Lucy, ’76, Tokheim, owners of Tokheim Stoneware located near Dawson, Minn.; and Mark Diekmann, ‘83, currently working for Paragon Dental Practice Transitions.

The Honorary Lifetime Membership Award recipient is Mike McHugh, former Speech Communication: Radio-TV Professor who retired following the 2013-14 academic year.

Marri Carrow, ’08, regional director for the western hemisphere at the U.S. Grains Council, is the 2015 GOLD (Graduate of the Last Decade) Award recipient.

The 26th University Gala, the single-largest scholarship fund-raiser at SMSU, will be held at 6 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 25 in the R/A Facility.

The SMSU volleyball team takes on Concordia St. Paul at 7 p.m. in the P/E Gym Friday night. The Planetarium (SM 108) will host a laser light show at 8 p.m.

The annual Lions Club pancake breakfast will begin the Saturday, Sept. 26 Homecoming festivities. It will be held from 7-10:30 a.m. at the Fire Hall.

The Mustang Stampede — a 5K walk/run and 10K run — will begin at 8 a.m. from the Schwan Regional Event Center. Registration begins at 7:30 a.m.

The Homecoming parade will begin at 11 a.m., with the lineup starting at 10 a.m. at the Lyon/Jewett Streets checkpoint. The parade will run its usual route, from Lyon St. to Main St., then north, disbanding at 5th St.

An alumni parade hospitality tent featuring breakfast paninos will be located at the corner of Main St. and East College Dr., at Memorial Park, starting at 10:45 a.m.

A women’s tea will be held in the Women’s Center lobby area in the Student Center starting at 1 p.m.

A Homecoming Tailgate/Family Fun Fest will be held from 4-6 p.m. in the R/A Facility parking lot area. It will feature family games and entertainment, and live music.

The Homecoming football game begins at 6 p.m. and will feature the Mustangs taking on Moorhead at the Schwan Regional Event Center.

After the game, 176 Key Dueling Pianos will perform at the Varsity Pub parking lot starting at 9 p.m.

The women’s soccer team hosts Minot State and the University of Mary at noon and 1 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 26 and 27, respectively.

The annual athletic Celebration of Excellence will be at 11 a.m. on Sept. 27 in the Conference Center Upper Ballroom.
