Spanish to be Offered as Minor

Southwest Minnesota State University will offer a minor in Spanish starting in the fall semester 2015.
The minor, last offered in 2013, was reinstated following the work of a Spanish Work Group on campus, which made the recommendation to President Connie J. Gores.
“The Faculty Association felt strongly that the Spanish program continue with a minor,” said Dr. Thomas Williford, Professor of History and a member of the Spanish Work Group.
“(Faculty Association President) Dr. Vicki Brockman worked with President Gores to come up with a solution,” he continued. “Our group generated a lot of ideas. We have been asked in the coming year to make those ideas more concrete, and truly act upon them,” said Williford. “We are talking about measurable outcomes, and true action steps.”
One of those ideas, said Williford, would be to engage regional businesses and schools and discuss with them how a Spanish minor can benefit them in the years to come.
Williford said the Spanish minor will benefit SMSU students, academic programs, and the region as a whole, and looks forward to working in the coming academic year to promoting the program and helping make it an attractive academic option for students seeking their degrees in any number of academic areas.
