SMSU Family Weekend Activities

Families of Southwest Minnesota State University students are invited to join the festivities of Family Weekend, Sept. 16-18. Parents, siblings, grandparents, and other family members will have an opportunity to experience campus life with their student while participating in the variety of fun activities planned.

Family Weekend begins on Friday evening, Sept. 16 with two showings of “Finding Dory” at 6:30 p.m. and 9 p.m. in the Student Center lower level TV lounge.

A Planetarium Star Show & Laser Light Show will be held at 7 p.m. Friday in the Planetarium, SM 108. Take 2 Improv will perform in the Fine Arts Black Box Theater at 8 p.m.

On Saturday, Sept. 17, a complementary welcome brunch will be served in the Conference Center Upper Ballroom at 11 a.m., with greetings from President Connie J. Gores and the SMSU Student Association. Be sure to RSVP online by noon on Sept. 14. (click here to complete form)

Residence Life and the Residence Hall Association will be providing cotton candy and popcorn at the Schwan Regional Event Center beginning at 11 a.m., before the Mustang football team takes on the University of Mary at 1 p.m. Tickets to the game are free for SMSU students, $15 for reserved seating, $12 for adults, $8 for students and seniors, and free for ages 5 & under.

The Chemistry Club will present a Magic Show at 2 p.m. in BA 102, with liquid nitrogen ice cream to follow. Families will have the opportunity to visit the William Whipple Art Gallery Exhibit from 2-4 p.m. The Mustang Zone on the second floor of the Student Center will also be open, with free play from 2-5 p.m. A “Life’s Short, Dessert First” ice cream social will begin at 4 p.m. at the Campus Religious Center. To end the night, families are invited to attend the Pursuit of Excellence Marching Band Festival at the Schwan Regional Event Center. Entry is $10 per person at the gate.

Friday, September 16

6:30 p.m. and 9:00 p.m.:  Cinema @ the Centers “Finding Dory” Student Center Lower Level TV Lounge (Seating for 35)

7:00 p.m.:  Planetarium Show: “Planetarium Star Show & Laser Light Show” Planetarium SM 108 (Seating for 68)

8:00 p.m.:  Take 2 Improv Show, Fine Arts Black Box Theatre (Seating for 75)

Saturday, September 17

8:00 a.m. – 10:00 a.m.:  Breakfast On Your Own

10:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.:  Barnes & Noble Bookstore Hours (SC East Entrance)

10:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m.:  Family Weekend Check-in at Student Center East Entrance 

11:00 a.m. – 8:00 p.m.:  The Coffeehouse @ SMSU Hours, Student Center

11:00 a.m.  Complimentary Welcome Brunch, Conference Center Upper Ballroom
