SMSU Earns More Recognition
Southwest Minnesota State University continues to be honored for its affordability, value and excellence.
Most recently, SMSU was honored as a top college for teacher education by Online College Database.
The Online College Database's ranking, "Top Colleges in Minnesota Shaping the Next Generation," honors the post-secondary institutions in the state that graduated the most education and teaching professionals in 2012. A total of 28 institutions were ranked.

McLean Wins Poetry Prize
SMSU Professor of English Dr. Susan McLean has won the 2014 Donald Justice Poetry Prize for her second poetry book manuscript, The Whetstone Misses the Knife.
The prize is given annually to one American poet for an unpublished book-length manuscript of formal poetry. The award includes publication of her book by Story Line Press in June 2014, a reading from the book at the West Chester University Poetry Conference in West Chester, Penn., in June 2014, free registration at the conference, and $1,000.
“Donald Justice is a poet who was known for writing poems in form, which is the kind I write, too,” said McLean. “He taught in a number of universities, and wound up in the creative writing program at the University of Iowa.”
McLean is on sabbatical this academic year and has been traveling as she researches and translates the work of Latin poet Catullus.... Read More McLean Wins Poetry Prize
Popular Planetarium Christmas Shows Upcoming
The Southwest Minnesota State University Planetarium Christmas and laser light shows will be held on five upcoming dates.
This year’s show is entitled” Star of Wonder” and will be held Saturday, Dec. 14 at 4 p.m.; Friday, Dec. 20 at 7 p.m.; Saturday, Dec. 21 at 7 p.m.; Sunday, Dec. 22 at 4 p.m.; and Tuesday, Dec. 24 at 4 p.m.
The SMSU Planetarium is located in SM 108 on campus. It seats 70. Planetarium Director Dr. Ken Murphy said that if a show sells out, he will add another immediately following.
“Our Christmas show is annually one of our best-attended events,” said Murphy. “We’ve had some shows cancelled over the past two years due to weather, so we’re hoping that the weather cooperates this year.”... Read More Popular Planetarium Christmas Shows Upcoming
