Maggie Wolverton performingThe music program seeks to create an environment conducive to the development of musical understanding and appreciation, creativity, utilization of technology and artistic performance. Specific objectives are to achieve personal and professional growth through the development of artistic sensitivity in music-making; to contribute to the understanding and development of aesthetic insight to empower individuals for discovering and achieving personal improvement; to develop a cross-fertilization of musical styles and world music through research, scholarship, performance, creative expression and utilization of technology; to prepare professional competent musicians, and to provide the musical knowledge, skill, and experience for those who wish to build a teaching career in music.

Students may obtain a Bachelor of Arts degree in Music with emphases in Music in the Liberal Arts, Instrumental Performance, Vocal Performance, Piano Performance & Pedagogy, Theory/ Composition, or Management; or a Bachelor of Science degree in Vocal and/ or Instrumental Music Education.

Hawaiian Night anticsThe Bachelor of Science in Music Education degree provides two paths to licensure as a music teacher.  Emphases in this degree program lead to K-12 licensure in Vocal/General Music or Instrument/General Music.  All music education majors complete a set of core music courses including music theory, history, piano, conducting, arranging, and pedagogy.  All majors also take a series of courses through the SMSU Education Department covering topics such as technology, special needs students, professional development and reading, as well as a student teaching practicum.  

The Bachelor of Arts in Music provides opportunities for all SMSU students to develop an understanding and appreciation of music, their own creativity, and artistic performance by focusing on a rigorous study of music within the context of a broad and versatile program of general studies.  The BA in Music degree offers six emphases for SMSU students.

  • Music in the Liberal Arts,
  • Instrumental Performance,
  • Vocal Performance,
  • Piano Performance and Pedagogy,
  • Theory Composition, and
  • Management
Each emphasis within the Bachelor of Arts in Music curriculum provides a comprehensive general academic education with a rigorous training in music in order to develop the creative and intellectual habits essential for success in continued study in graduate school and careers of all kinds.

The Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science degrees in music are fully accredited by the National Association of Schools of Music.
