SouthwestNet Tools

SouthwestNet houses many tools that provide functionality for many areas of campus. In fact, tools are used to operate and maintain the slideshow on the homepage of SMSU. There is also a tool to help Admission schedule on campus visits and for the President to send out a monthly newsletter.

The majority of tools are used for specific departments or areas on campus, however some of them are accessible to everyone on campus, faculty, or staff. There are currently two such tools which are Class Cancellation and Advisee Email Tool. Click on them to jump straight to the content.

Class Cancellation Tool

The Class Cancellation tool is a great way to efficiently notify your students that your class will be canceled on a particular date. Classes can be canceled for a number of reasons, but typically they need to be canceled quickly and easily. While designing the Class Cancellation tool, ease of use was the primary focus.

Once a class cancellation occurs, the notice will automatically send an email to all students in the class and post an alert to the SMSU website. As a professor, you should urge your students to get in the habit of checking the SMSU website and their SMSU email before coming to campus each day in case of any cancellations.

1. Log into SouthwestNet
2. Click on Tools > Class Cancellation
3. If you are currently teaching courses, your class list will appear automatically alongside an easy to use calendar (date picker).

4. You can then locate and click on the date of your class cancellation. Selected by default is the current date, but if you know you will cancel a class in the future, you can do it from the date picker on the left side. In the example above, March 11th, 2013 was clicked.
5. Once the date is selected, the classes for that particular day will show up. You will find that only classes that haven't started yet will be selectable.
6. Locate the class(es) you would like to cancel and click on each one. They will turn green when selected.

7. Once the desired classes are selected, click the Next button.

8. The final screen shows you a recap of the classes you are canceling as well as a small, optional box to fill out if you'd like to send your class(es) a brief message about why you're out, if they are to do any work for the next class period, to remind them of an upcoming project, etc. Note that the same message will go to both classes in this example, so if you need to send separate messages, click Cancel and start over, choosing one class at a time.
9. When you are satisfied with your message or are ready to cancel, click on the Confirm Class Cancellation(s) button.

Once complete, the alert gets posted to the SMSU website and notifies each student in your class.

Advisee Email Tool

The Advisee Email tool allows professors to easily email a message to their advisees.

Locate the Advisee Email tool by logging into SouthwestNet, clicking on Tools > Advisee Email List

Updates will be made to the tool to allow better selection of students such as First Year students, graduating students, etc. If you have any requests, please contact us.
