Using the SMSU Website

Understandably, websites are hard to navigate due to the mountainous functions and information available. So, the following information will introduce you to specific features of the site. As always, if you have any questions or comments, don't hesitate to email the  Webmaster.

A lot of detailed information is below and we recommend reading or at least looking at the pictures, but if you know what you're looking for here are the topics covered:

  1. The Primary Navigation Bar
  2. Quick Links
  3. Alerts
  4. Search Bar
  5. Slideshow Menu
  6. Footer

The Navigation Bar

For easier navigation, the Primary Navigation Bar - which is shown in a screenshot below - will help you navigate our official website.

The ultimate goal of the navigation bar is so that a website user can flip between several pages and know where their next move could be. It also allows for us to 'theme' the bar in different colors to provide a unique look for various pages, but also keep the simplicity and consistency with the layout.

What's so special about it?

The primary navigation bar is nothing too special at first glance, but with closer inspection you will see more of its usefulness. This is where change has occurred to make the site function better on mobile platforms such as the smartphones and tablets but also to offer a better experience when browsing on a desktop computer or laptop.

Quick Links

This menu provides a quick reference to frequently searched for pages and services. Links are broken into 3 categories and organized alphabetically: Academic, Services, and Pages.

Alerts

Alerts are a feature of the site that will be used to document things like weather notifications, class cancellations, and other urgent campus related messages. If an alert is active, the exclamation mark will be replaced with a number and it will glow orange. The number displayed corresponds to the number of alerts that are active at the time. All individuals connected to the campus are recommended to check the alerts before class, work or events.

Keep in mind that the alerts icon is not only used for full campus emergencies or announcements. When the entire campus is affected, it will glow orange but will also be accompanied by the banner across the top located between the Primary Navigation Menu and the icons/search bar.   alerts2.png

Search Icon

Our search bar functions as a on-website portal to Google searches. That means you can search any word in this search bar and only pages from the official SMSU website will appear as search results. This really helps one navigate the SMSU website. Tired of manually searching for a particular page? Just use this search bar!  search-bar.png

The Slideshow Menu

Our slideshow has been the highlight of the homepage for quite some time and it features fun graphics which get users engaged. If you have any events or information that you'd like to share in the Slideshow, please contact Marcy Olson.

The slideshow flips between multiple images and can be paused by hovering over the current slide. Taking the mouse off of the slideshow progresses the slide forward. Beneath the slides are small circles, representing each slide. Clicking on them will take you to the corresponding slide.

The menu on the right side offers a further set of quick links, or resources, to help users navigate right from the homepage. Simply clicking the appropriate item will take over the slideshow with links that matter.

The Footer

Basically, the footer is meant as a way to take a little bit of the homepage with you wherever you go on the site.

Lastly, on the very bottom right is a Return to Top button which scrolls the user all the way back up to the top. This button is always visible as you scroll down from the top of the page. This provides an easy way to get back to the top navigation of the website.
