‘Mustangs Unleashed’ Homecoming Sept. 26-Oct. 1

SMSU alumni from the region and across the country will return to campus Sept. 26-Oct. 1 to celebrate “Mustangs Unleashed,” the theme of the 2016 Southwest Minnesota State University Homecoming.

Numerous events will be held during the week leading up to Homecoming, including movies, live entertainment, coronation, residence hall decorating and karaoke.

Coronation of the Homecoming king and queen is at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 29 in the Conference Center Lower Ballroom.

Five alumni and one community member will receive Alumni Association awards at the Friday, Sept. 30 noon luncheon in the Conference Center Ballroom.

Alumni Achievement Award honorees include Bill Fenske, ’84, Chief Financial Officer at Rice Memorial Hospital; Jerry Bly, ’71, a retired agricultural representative for several companies and his wife, Ricke, ’73, a retired elementary school teacher; and Ann Roemen, ’84, Executive Director of Independent Healthcare Associates and Chief Executive Officer of AccoCare, both in Sioux Falls, S.D.

The Honorary Lifetime Membership Award recipient is Marilyn Strate, an Associate Professor of Education within the PE Program.

Sara (Graf) Jones, ’10, a financial analyst for UniPro Foodservice in Atlanta, Ga., is the 2015 GOLD (Graduate of the Last Decade) Award recipient.

The 27th annual University Gala, the largest scholarship fund-raiser at SMSU, will be held at 6 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 30 in the R/A Facility.

The SMSU volleyball team takes on Northern State at 7 p.m. in the PE Gym Friday night. The Planetarium (SM 108) will host a laser light show at 8 p.m.

The annual Lions Club pancake breakfast will begin the Saturday, Oct. 1 Homecoming festivities. It will be held from 7-10:30 a.m. at the Fire Hall.

The Veterans Club Homecoming 5K walk/run and 10K run will begin at 8:00 a.m. from the parking lot of the Social Science building. Registration begins at 7:30 a.m.

The Homecoming parade will begin at 11 a.m., with the lineup starting at 10 a.m. at the Lyon/Jewett Streets checkpoint.

An alumni parade hospitality tent featuring breakfast paninos will be located at the corner of Main St. and East College Dr., at Memorial Park, starting at 10:45 a.m. 

A women’s tea will be held in the Women’s Center lobby area in the Student Center starting at 1 p.m.

A Planetarium star show will be held at 2 p.m. in SM 108, and the SMSU volleyball team plays MSU Moorhead at 3 p.m. in the PE Gym.

A Homecoming Tailgate/Family Fun Fest will be held from 4-6 p.m. in the R/A Facility parking lot area. It will feature family games and entertainment, and live music.

The Homecoming football game begins at 6 p.m. and will feature the Mustangs taking on Upper Iowa at the Schwan Regional Event Center.

After the game, 176 Key Dueling Pianos will perform at the Bello Cucina Event Center starting at 9 p.m.

The women’s soccer team hosts Minot State and the University of Mary at noon and 1 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 30 and Oct. 1, respectively.
