Recall the barren years, girl
the long nightmare
of wanting and waiting and
not having

and maybe just cry a little
at the thought
hell, cry a lot for
the sorrow and the joy

remember the travels, the lessons:

France, and loneliness

Prague, unreality

in Sweden it was poverty and
across Canada, the shortness of time

reflect for a moment on nieces
and nephews and other
people’s kids and
if you still don’t realize that this
is what it was all about
then I won’t tell anyone
