Important Dates


Many summer courses are not-guaranteed. Register early and then be sure to meet the minimum payment criteria to hold your registration in the courses.  Early registration will help ensure that courses meet the minimum enrollment limits.

May 7 to May 25, 2018:  Bookstore charging available

May 21, 2018:  Monday, First Day of Summer Session

Last Day to Drop a summer course with a refund:  See date for each individual course in E-Services or the Registration & Class Schedule on the SMSU website under Quick Links.

May 25, 2018:  Friday, Deadline for signing up for direct deposit if you would like your financial aid overage by direct deposit (rather than by mail by check).

May 25, 2018:  Friday, Minimum payment criteria must be met to hold your course registrations for all Summer courses regardless of the start date of the course (Check your student e-services account online to determine if you have met the minimum payment criteria.  A green "GO" symbol means requirements have been met, a red "STOP" symbol means your registration is at risk of cancellations for non-payment.)

May 28, 2018:  Monday, Memorial Day - No Classes.

May 29, 2018:  Tuesday, Registration Cancellation for Non-Payment processed. If you have not met the minimum payment criteria, your courses will be dropped.  Click here for more info

May 30, 2018:  Wednesday, Financial Aid applied.

June 1, 2018:  Friday, Financial Aid Overages will begin to be deposited into bank accounts for those who have set up direct deposit.  If no direct deposit is set up, checks will be mailed to the student's local address on file as of May 29, 2018.

June 6, 2018:  Wednesday, Due Date for Summer account balances.  If  accounts are not paid in full, a $30 internal payment plan fee will be charged.  With the internal payment plan, 1/2 of your remaining student account balance is due.

July 6, 2018:  Friday, Final Payment due date if on an internal payment plan.  Your student account must be at a zero balance after today.  A $50 late fee will be applied to any student account with a remaining balance.



August 1, 2018:  International Student Insurance due

August 6, 2018:  Minimum Payment Due

August 13 - 31, 2018:  Bookstore charging available

August 23, 2018:  Freshman Move in Day

August 23 - 26, 2018:  Freshman Orientation

August 27, 2018:  First Day of Fall Semester

August 31, 2018:  Last Day to Add Classes or Drop Classes with a Refund

August 31, 2018:  must meet minimum payment criteria

September 3, 2018:  Labor Day, No Classes

September 4, 2018:  Registration Cancellation for Non-Payment, if minimum payment criteria is not met by August 31, classes will be dropped

September 5, 2018:  Financial Aid applied to student accounts if courses have already begun.  If in graduate courses that don't start until later, financial aid won't apply to accounts until 10 days before the class starts.

September 7, 2018:  FINANCIAL AID OVERAGES will begin being deposited into bank accounts for those who have set up direct deposit.  If no direct deposit is set up, checks will be mailed to the student's local address on file as of September 4, 2018.

September 14, 2018:  Must have parking permit displayed or may be ticketed

October 1, 2018:  DUE DATE FOR FALL.  If on an SMSU Payment Plan ($30 charge will apply), 1/2 of total account balance must be paid.

October 25, 2018:  Final Payment Due Date for SMSU Payment Plan. ($50 late fee will be applied after this date)

November 12, 2018:  Veteran's Day - No Classes

November 21 - 23, 2018:  Thanksgiving Break, No Classes

November 27, 2018:  Last Day to Drop with a "W"

December 14, 2018:  Last Day of Classes

December 17 - 20, 2018:  Final Exams

Southwest Minnesota State University is a member of the Minnesota State College and University (Minnesota State) System. As a member of Minnesota State, Southwest Minnesota State's financial statements are a part of the Minnesota State financial statement. SMSU is also individually audited by an independent auditing firm. SMSU's and Minnesota State's financial statements are available online at A copy of SMSU's audit has been placed on reserve at the library.
