Steps to Apply

To apply for the Blue to Brown (B2B) Connection program, your first step is to reach out to Katelyn Tamm, Admission Counselor, at SMSU.  Katelyn can be reached at (612)-756-2983 or via email at  Once you have had the opportunity to speak with Katelyn about the program, you will begin the process of applying online through Minnesota West.  Our coordinator will give you some important information about the application process before you begin, so it is important to have that conversation first if you are interested in the program.

Once you complete the online application through Minnesota West Community & Technical College (MN West), step two is to review your ACT/SAT/Accuplacer scores with representatives from MN West.  As a criterion for admission into the B2B program, students must meet minimum scores in both reading and math to be officially accepted into the program.  Those minimum scores are below:

Minimum Scores - Reading

  • Accuplacer - 50 in Reading Comprehension section
  • ACT - 14

Minimum Scores - Math

  • Accuplacer - 38 in Elementary Algebra section
  • ACT - 15

If you have not taken the Accuplacer, each applicant will need to complete the test in order determine your skill level in reading, english, and math.   Please check out the Accuplacer information on the MN West website for more details about the test, along with free resources that may help you prepare.

Below are some important items to note about the Accuplacer:

  • There is no fee for the test. It is free for you to take the first time you take it.
  • The Accuplacer test is not timed. Most complete it in 1 ½ to 2 hours, but you can have more time if you need it.
  • The test can be taken on either MN West or SMSU’s campuses. If you are located closer to another Minnesota State College and University (MinnState) location, the Accuplacer can also be taken on one of their campuses as well.
  • On the day of the Accuplacer, bring a picture ID and know your social security number.

Need accommodations due to a disability?  Students must have ADA documentation and make prior arrangements with the Disability Services staff at the campus where you are applying. If taking the test through MN West, click here
