Steps to Apply

To apply for the Blue to Brown (B2B) Connection program, your first step is to reach out to Scott Voss, who is our Blue to Brown Connection Coordinator.  Scott can be reached at 507-537-6023 or via email at  Once you have had the opportunity to speak with our coordinator about the program, you will begin the process of applying online through Minnesota West.  Our coordinator will give you some important information about the application process before you begin, so it is important to have that conversation first if you are interested in the program.

Once you complete the online application through Minnesota West, the next step will be to review your ACT/SAT/Accuplacer scores with representatives from Minnesota West or our Blue to Brown Connection Coordinator.  As a criterion for admission into the Blue to Brown program, students must meet minimum scores in both reading and math to be officially accepted into the program.  Those minimum scores are below:

Reading Minimum Scores

  • Accuplacer - 50 in Reading Comprehension section
  • ACT - 14

Math Minimum Scores

  • Accuplacer - 38 in Elementary Algebra section
  • ACT - 15

Next, each applicant is encouraged to complete the Accuplacer test so that we can get an idea of your skill level in reading, english, and math. Please check out the Accuplacer information on the MN West website for information about the test, and for some free resources that help you prepare to take the test.  Below are some important things to know about the Accuplacer.

  • There is no fee for the test. It is free for you to take the first time.
  • The Accuplacer test is not timed. Most complete it in 1 ½ to 2 hours, but you can have more time if you need it.
  • The test can be taken on either MN West or SMSU’s campuses. If you are located closer to another Minnesota State College and University (MinnState) location, the Accuplacer can also be taken on one of their campuses as well.
  • On the day of the Accuplacer, bring a picture ID and know your social security number.

Students with disabilities who need accommodations must have ADA documentation and need to make prior arrangements with the Disability Services staff at the campus where you are applying.
