Directions for Using the SmartClassrooms

Important SmartClassroom Information:

  • DO NOT move the SmartBoards. You may use them, or the available chalkboard space in the room, but you cannot move the SmartBoards out of the way. When a SmartBoard is moved, you risk breaking its brackets and supports, and you throw off its calibration so that nobody can properly use the SmartBoard until maintenance has been performed on it. So please refrain from moving the SmartBoards.
  • When you are done with class, please remember to sign off of the computer and turn off the projector.
    You know how frustrating it is when you get into a classroom and someone has locked the computer because they did not log out? Don't let that person be you. Log off when you're finished. And leaving the projector on will burn the bulb out faster. Also, turning off the projector saves a lot of energy. So, please and thank you for turning the projectors off when you are finished.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

1. What if someone else is already logged into the computer and it is locked when I come to class?
Hold the power button in until the computer shuts down. Let go of the power button after the computer is off and hit the power button one more time to turn the computer back on.

2. What if the projector is not displaying?
You will first want to verify that the Control Panel box on top of the cabinet is showing the Display or Projector as on. If it is on, verify that the media you are using (Computer, Doc Cam, etc.) is also on. You may also want to try turning the projector off, then back on. If it was just used and turned off, the projector will need to cool down before it will turn itself back on. This can take several minutes. If you are still having issues please contact the TRC Helpdesk, it is possible that a bulb is burned out.

3. What if the Doc Cam will not show the object I want to display?
You will first want to verify that the Control Panel box on top of the cabinet is showing the Doc Cam highlighted. You will also want to verify that the Doc Cam is on. There are several models of Doc Cams in the Smart Classrooms, so their power buttons are located in different areas. You may need to adjust the Doc Cam to focus the object in.

4. What if I have my laptop plugged in and there is nothing displaying in the projector?
You will first want to verify that the Control Panel box has the laptop highlighted on it. If it is not highlighted, please make sure to do so. You may also need to change the display on your laptop to project the image to the display. This is usually done with the FN key and the function key (ex. F8) which shows a monitor or CRT/LCD. Normally, the first time you hit these two keys it gives control to the laptop. The second time it gives control to both the laptop and the projector. The third time it gives control to the projector only. This sequence is not the same on all laptops, but this should help give an idea of what to expect.

5. What if I cannot hear the sound?
There are two places to check for sound. First, you will want to check the Control Panel box on top of the cabinet. Turn the volume up slowly, to maximum volume. If sound is still not coming out, try the second volume knob located in the rack above the computer. We ask that this knob not be touched unless you are troubleshooting the sound. Turn this control towards its max. If you cannot hear anything after checking these two places, please verify that the volume on the computer is not muted or turned down. If you are using your own laptop, please make sure that the audio cable is plugged into the line out and not the line in.
