Community Users

SMSU ID OR COURTESY CARD IS REQUIRED FOR ALL CHECKOUTS.

Access to the library collections is open to all and we encourage area community members to take advantage of SMSU library resources. Students with a current Minnesota State registration ID from any academic institution may check out materials. High school students and community members may receive borrowing privileges by registering with a public library card at the Circulation Desk, Monday through Friday from 9 am to 4 pm, or call Pam Gladis 537-6813 for an appointment. Please complete and bring the application form to the circulation desk to receive our borrowing privileges.

Most of the online indexes and databases other than the MnPALS catalog are provided through subscription contracts that limit access to currently enrolled SMSU students, faculty, and staff. The number of users in those categories determines the fees SMSU pays. To adhere to licensing agreements, we must authenticate our remote users. Anyone can use the databases in the library, but the SMSU Library in compliance with our contractual arrangements does not permit remote access for non-affiliated users.

Research help is available many hours that the SMSU Library is open. Reference librarians answer users’ questions and help them find and evaluate appropriate resources. Because the library is part of the whole academic structure on campus, the librarians attempt to teach people how to locate and analyze information themselves rather than simply supplying answers. Depending upon the number of people needing assistance, librarians help anyone who comes to the library begin the search for information. However, when many people are waiting for assistance or lengthy interaction is necessary, librarians offer the option of scheduling individual appointments.

Interlibrary Loan Services
Despite the size of the SMSU collection, students, faculty, and staff sometimes need additional resources from other libraries. Our interlibrary loan staff secures hundreds of books and journal articles each year to support SMSU coursework and research. Because of the expense and staff time involved in the interlibrary loan process, SMSU Library does not provide interlibrary loan services for non-affiliated users. Members of the public should place interlibrary loan requests through their local public library.
