Document Delivery

Document Delivery Services for Students Living at a Distance

Document Delivery Registration Form

What is document delivery?
You can request delivery service for books from the Southwest Minnesota State University (SMSU) Library’s general circulating collection, books from other libraries, and periodical and journal articles from SMSU Library’s collection and from other libraries; requested articles must not be available full-text from an SMSU Library database.

Books are mailed to your home address. Articles are either mailed or sent electronically to your SMSU email address.

Who is eligible for this service?
Any currently registered student living 30 miles or more from campus and does not come to campus at least once a week can use this service.

How much does this service cost?
The library will absorb the cost for delivery. However, you are responsible for the cost of mailing items back to SMSU Library.

How do I request items through document delivery?
To use this service you must first complete the Document Delivery Registration Form. Allow at least 2 working days to process registration. If you need to request items immediately after registering, please include the following message in the “Note” section of your requests: “I have just registered for document delivery.”

After you register, you will use Interlibrary Loan to request items.

Are there any restrictions on what I can request?
We usually cannot obtain or mail the following:

• articles longer than 50 pages
• entire issues of journals or magazines
• reference and reserve materials
• rare books or original manuscripts
• some dissertations and theses
• bulky or fragile items
• most Minnesota Historical Society materials
• items in special collections
• electronic books

How do I return materials sent to my home address?
You must return books to the SMSU Library in person or by mail. If you choose to return materials by mail allow time to ensure receipt at SMSU Library before the due date. Media mail is usually the least expensive option; please ask your post office clerk. Please remember that you are responsible for all return mailing costs.

If you choose to return books by mail, please use the return address labels included in the books when they were delivered to you. Or, mail to:

How long does it take to get books or articles?
