Retired SMSU Philosophy Professor Hugh Curtler has had his book, Ethical Argument: Critical Thinking in Ethics, published in Korean.
Oxford Press recently released the textbook, first published by Paragon House in 1993.
“I got an e-mail from one of the people at Oxford, they said they had an interest in publishing the book in Korean, and they wanted to know if I’d be interested,” explained Curtler. “I think it’s terrific — Korean!” he exclaimed.
Curtler initially wrote the book, he said, “because I was looking for a book that combined critical thinking skills with ethics and I could not fine anything, so I decided to write it. I taught both subjects, so why not bring those two together, an attempt to synthesize,” he said.
“It reflects my approach to teaching — the whole object is to get the kids to think,” he said. “The book was a labor of love.”
Curtler said he has expanded the book some, “added some examples, elaborated on some points,” he said.
He also received input from SMSU Associate Professor of Humanities Dr. Stewart Day.
“I’m in the Pacific Rim now, watch out — I’ve got my foot in the door,” joked Curtler.
