Faculty Spotlight: Dr. Christine Olson, Professor of Psychology

Dr. Christine Olson joined SMSU in 1999 and is responsible for helping weave civic engagement into the fabric of SMSU.

Working with an interdisciplinary group of faculty active in service learning, she established the SMSU Center for Civic & Community Engagement in 2003. The Center emphasizes civic and community engagement on SMSU’s campus by incorporating these efforts into student learning experiences. She served as co-coordinator with her colleague, Scott Peterson, for most years up to 2016.

Olson earned her undergraduate degree in psychology from Bethany College, a master’s degree in counseling and higher education administration from Kansas State University, and a PhD in counseling psychology from Arizona State University. She was the 2018 recipient of the Cowan Award, a distinction given to SMSU faculty or staff members who have contributed to both the University and the region through civic engagement, community partnerships, social entrepreneurship, and more.
