ADM & SMSU Environmental Learning Area

Prairie, woodlands, ponds, marsh, and wildlife -- all can be found in the northwest corner of the SMSU campus. Hike the groomed trails that wind through the 22-acre Environmental Learning Area or strap on cross-country skis for a brisk winter work-out. An elevated observation platform allows visitors to view the activities of muskrats and waterfowl. The general public, university and K-12 school groups, and other outdoor enthusiasts are invited to increase their understanding and appreciation of nature as they experience all the Environmental Learning Area has to offer. Use the link at the left to view maps and pictures of the ADM & SMSU Environmental Learning Area.

Along the southwest corner of the Learning Area is a 4-acre restored prairie. The prairie restoration project was started during the summer of 1998 with help from a DNR Conservation Partner's Grant to Dr E. A. Desy (Biology Program). Every year a new species of prairie plant is "discovered" and added to the inventory list as the prairie continues to develop from the seeds sown in 1998. Use the link at the left to learn more about some of the prairie plants you could encounter in the ADM & SMSU Environmental Learning Area.
