Mustang Mentorship Program: Alumni
What is the Mustang Mentorship Program?
The SMSU Alumni Association has partnered with SMSU Career Services to provide alumni and students with an easy way to form rewarding, mutually beneficial relationships that advance their careers.
Why would a student want to be a mentee?
The program gives students the opportunity to form one-on-one relationships with successful alumni. Mentors provide resources, support, and tips related to job hunting and career choices.
Why should I consider serving as a mentor?
As you grew in your career, chances are you had a mentor or someone who helped you along the way. As a mentor, you are paying it forward and helping students launch their career. What could be more rewarding than watching that student grow as a professional?
Is the Mentoring Program a way for students to find a job?
No. While it is a great way for students to connect with alumni for valuable support, it is not intended as a job search tool. Some pairings have led to internships and full-time roles, mentors have no obligation to offer or find a job for their mentees.
Through the program, students do gain soft skills, expand their networks, and access industry experts which all enhance their career development and employability prospects.
How long does the program last and what is the time commitment?
The mentor program will begin in October 2024 and will last until spring 2025 (or longer depending on you and your mentee). There will be a virtual meet & greet, a midpoint virtual check-in, and a final reception. Check-ins are highly encouraged, but not required. A time commitment of 1-2 hours a month is anticipated.
How often you connect with your mentee is up to you. However, we suggest checking in (by phone or email) once per month. An overview of activities (suggested and required) and a handbook is available. Additionally, participants will be prompted by email with strategies and tips throughout the year.Program Calendar 2024-2025:
