Desire 2 Learn (D2L Brightspace):- SMSU uses D2L Brightspace as the course management software for a variety of courses. Faculty members can place the course syllabus, content, quizzes, grades and discussions on D2L Brightspace to supplement on-campus courses or provide fully online classroom experiences. Students can participate in class through discussion groups, learning teams, submission of papers or examinations, and individual or group projects. Through D2L Brightspace students can check their progress, receive feedback and discover final grades at their course web site.

For any technical problems specifically related to D2L Brightspace (trouble logging in, changing passwords, using D2L Brightspace tools, etc), online learners can access this 24-hour D2L Brightspace Support Services Site:

Can I switch from on-campus to a Extended Learning online student?

There are criteria for SMSU on-campus students to switch to Extended Learning online students~

  • Students need to have Senior Standing and be within 2 semesters of reasonably completing their degree with Extended Learning
  • Students need to have the MnTC or LEP completed.
  • Students need to have all major core or foundational courses completed (100/200 level major courses).
  • Students need to have a referral from their academic adviser stating the move away from campus is unavoidable and the student will complete the degree and graduate if transfer is granted.    Advisor Referral Form
  • Student must state there are extenuating circumstances that are not able to wait until after graduation. Student may be asked to provide evidence.
