Information for New and Prospective Employees

Applicants not currently employed by Minnesota State can access the Career Site to search for and apply to jobs, as well as check the status of their applications. Applicants for a position will be prompted to create a Workday profile.

FAQs for Applicants

  • How do I update or add additional documents to my application?
    • If you forgot to attach a document to your application or have more documents to attach than Workday will allow, email the document to bailey.johnson.2@smsu.edu.

      Be sure each file name includes your name and the document type (e.g. transcript, cover letter, letter of reference, revised resume, etc.).

  • What is included in a job posting?
    • Posted: This is how long the position has been posted.
    • End Date: This is the date you can apply through until 11:59pm. Most positions must be open for a minimum of 7 days.
    • Working Title: The working title is a descriptive title of the role for the position. These are the most helpful with describing the work the position is responsible for.
    • Classification Title: The classification title is statutorily required on all classified job postings. These are a general description of work performed to ensure similar duties and responsibilities have the same schedule of pay under similar employment conditions.
    • Bargaining Unit/Union: This is the labor contract/union the position is in. Bargaining unit contracts are available from the Minnesota Management & Budget office.
    • FLSA Status: This is the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) status. The Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) establishes minimum wage, overtime pay, record keeping, and child labor standards affecting full-time and part-time workers in the private sector and in Federal, State, and local governments.
    • Salary Range: This is the compensation range for the position based on the applicable bargaining unit / union.
      • The range may be presented as either an hourly rate or an annualized base salary.
      • If the position is less than a 1.0 FTE, actual salary will be prorated accordingly based on the position FTE.
      • Final compensation is based on a combination of factors including education and related experience and, when applicable internal pay equity and relevant market data.
    • Job Description: This is a summary of the work the position is responsible for.
    • Minimum Qualifications: You must meet the position’s minimum qualifications. Be sure your application clearly demonstrates how you meet each of these requirements.
    • Preferred Qualifications: These are additional, desirable qualifications that can strengthen your application. If you meet any of them, include specific examples in your application materials.
    • Other Requirements: This section outlines any additional requirements beyond qualifications, such as background checks, reference checks, or education verification. These must be completed as part of the hiring process.
