Southwest Minnesota State University is closely monitoring the emerging public health concern involving the 2019 Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19).

If you have traveled abroad to an area affected by COVID-19 or have had close contact with a confirmed case of COVID-19, health officials encourage you to seek further guidance from your preferred health professional.

Offices/Departments open On Campus

Student Center Building Monday – Friday 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Sat-Sunday 11:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.
SC Information Desk (Helpline) M – F 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
International Student Services & GS Tuesday – Thursday 12:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.
Dining Services open only to Residence Life students for take-out; students will be notified of times for pick up
Residence Life Office Monday-Friday 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Health Services Monday-Friday 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
Library and TRC Monday – Friday 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.
Post Office Monday – Friday
9:00 a.m. to 11:30 p.m. and
12:30p.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Other offices with staff on campus, but maybe limited staffing, include Public Safety, Physical Plant and Information Technology Services.

All other offices are closed with only an occasional staff

Event Cancellations and Postponements

A number of events at Southwest Minnesota State University have been affected by the coronavirus (COVID-19) and have been either cancelled or postponed. They include:

  • The Mustang Zone is closed.
  • The Fitness Center is closed.
  • The Weight Room is closed.
  • The SMSU swimming pool is closed.
  • The men’s and women’s lockerrooms will be closed, and locked, at noon on March 20. Items should be picked up by then.
  • The Health Career Day, scheduled for March 18, has been cancelled.
  • The March 18 GOLD College kickoff event and all spring session courses have been cancelled.
  • VIP Senior Salute on March 19 is cancelled.
  • Bon Appetit, SMSU student restaurant, will be closed for the remainder of the semester starting on March 19.
  • The March 21 Junior Visit Day has been cancelled.
  • The Southwest Minnesota Orchestra’s first concert of the Beethoven/SMO 2/50 Festival, “Beethoven I,” originally scheduled for March 22, has been postponed and will be made up at a later date.
  • Art Professor Dr. Pat Brace’s presentation, “Gallery Talk,” on Monday, March 23 has been postponed to a later date.
  • The March 23 Jazz Ensemble concert, featuring guest artist Dr. William Huber, has been cancelled.
  • The Jazz Ensemble concert at Springfield High School on March 24 has been cancelled.
  • The “Shifting Narratives: Storytelling for Social Impact” event, scheduled for March 27, has been cancelled.
  • The March 28 Leo Lewis Foundation Sports Clinic, for children of military veterans, has been cancelled.
  • The Student Association Formal Dance, scheduled March 28, is cancelled.
  • The SMSU SHO Club interactive children’s lunch set for March 28 is cancelled.
  • “Spring Sing,” scheduled for March 29 at 2 p.m. is cancelled.
  • Joan Gittens’ presentation on “The Fight to Win Votes for Women on March 31 and April 1 is cancelled.
  • The poetry reading of visiting writer Wang Ping, scheduled for April 1, has been postponed until fall semester 2020.
  • The Student Association Blood Drive on April 1 has been cancelled.
  • The 2020 Fine Arts Celebration running from April 1-May 9 is cancelled. These events include:
    • SMO’s Children’s Concert on April 7
    • The Indigo Dying Workshop on April 7
    • The Forensics Showcase originally scheduled for April 14
    • Mustang Ovations also on April 14
    • Student Recitals on April 15 & 22 & 29
    • “Scenes of Enchantment,” SMSU Men’s Glee Club & Bella Voce’s concert on April 16
    • SMSU Theatre’s production of Peter and the Starcatcher originally scheduled for April 17-19, and 23-26 including all Pre-Show Dinners
    • Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences Student Awards on April 20
    • SMSU Jazz Ensemble’s concert on April 20
    • The 11th Annual Fashion Runway on April 21
    • SMSU Chorale Masterworks Concert also scheduled for April 21
    • A reading, “All About Emily,” in honor of the retirement of Dr. Emily Deaver scheduled for April 24
    • SMSU/Community Concert Band and the Symphonic Chamber Wind’s Concert, “NOT the Same Old Song and Dance,” scheduled for April 27
    • The April 28 Perceptions Readings
    • The Bridal Exhibition, “Here Comes the Bride: An Exploration of Bridal Fashion through the Years,” originally scheduled for April 30
    • Southwest Minnesota Orchestra’s Concert on May 3
    • As well as the long-term events like “What Were You Wearing?” Exhibit sponsored by New Horizons running from 3/30-4/3
    • Also, “Cyanotypes: Works on paper using a photographic process known as cyanotypes” running from 4/3-4/22
  • The Inauguration Ceremony for SMSU President Kumara Jayasuriya, scheduled for Friday, April 3, has been postponed and will be held in fall semester 2020.
  • The Minnesota Agriculture and Rural Leadership (MARL) graduation ceremony and 20th anniversary celebration, originally scheduled for April 3 at the Mayo Clinic Health System Event Center in Mankato, is postponed and will be rescheduled.
  • “Vivaldi’s Motezuma” scheduled for April 3, hosted by The Bach Society of Minnesota, is cancelled.
  • The International Food Festival, scheduled for April 4, has been cancelled.
  • The Career Services Professional Etiquette Dinner on April 8 has been cancelled.
  • The annual African Night, “Tour De Africa ’20,” scheduled for April 11, has been cancelled.
  • “Mustang Ovations: A Salute to Academic Success, Distinctiveness, and Meaningful Engagement,” scheduled for April 14, has been cancelled.
  • The SMSU Theatre’s production of “Peter and the Star Catcher,” scheduled for April 17-19 and 23-26, has been cancelled until fall semester 2020.
  • The Math Masters competition April 23 has been cancelled.
  • The SMSU Foundation Women’s Leadership Conference, “Flourish, Grow, Lead,” scheduled for Friday, April 24, has been postponed to a date to be announced later.
  • The “Math on the Northern Plains” event has been cancelled.
