Students, Faculty & Staff

StarID is the central Minnesota State authentication system. Everyone will be using their Star ID to login to E-services, D2L Brightspace, the SMSU email and onto any SMSU computer. Before you can login you need to activate your Star ID.

Students

In order to activate your Star ID you need to verify your identity in one of three ways.

  • Tech ID (Student ID). Select <school name> and then enter your eight digit Student ID and your social security number.
  • Library Card Barcode. Select <school name> and then enter the 14 character number from your library card and your social security number.
  • Personal Email Address. Enter the personal email address that’s on your E-Services account. The system will send a verification code to the email address. You can then use the Verification Code option to continue.

After you verify your identity you will be given your Star ID and then all you need to do is set your password. After you do that then you should be able to login with your Star ID.

Faculty & Staff

In order to activate your Star ID you need to verify your identity in one of three ways.

  • Tech ID (Employee ID). Select <school name> and then enter your Employee ID and your social security number.
  • State Employee Number. Select <school name> and then enter your State Employee Number and your social security number.
  • Library Card Barcode. Select <school name> and then enter the 14 character number from your library card and your social security number.

Why Star ID?

The Star ID system was created with one thing in mind. Logging into everything from everywhere with the same username and password. Before Star ID you would have two different logins with possibly two different passwords. After these changes take place it will just be one login with one password for everything SMSU related.

Your Star ID will transfer completely across all Minnesota State schools. Each individual school is connected to the Star ID system.
