Fine Arts Celebration April 8-May 6 Ninth annual event highlights talents of students, faculty

There will be something for everyone at the ninth annual Fine Arts Celebration, being held April 8 through May 6 at Southwest Minnesota State University.

Vocal and instrumental concerts, theatre productions, readings, student writing, art displays, forensic presentations, costume making and more are on the schedule.

“This is a way to highlight the fine work of our talented students and faculty,” said event coordinator Dr. John Ginocchio. “The majority of the events are free to the public and we invite people to check the schedule and come to campus for some of the events.”

SMSU English Professors Susan McLean and James Zarzana will read for their work on April 21 and April 22, respectively. In addition, contributors to the literary journal Perceptions will read on April 24.

A number of concerts are planned, including: SMSU/Community Concert Band, April 10; the Twin Cities Gay Men’s Chorus, April 11; Men’s Glee Club & Bella Voce, April 16; SMSU Voice Students and Faculty, April 18; Southwest Minnesota Orchestra, April 21; SMSU Chorale, April 23; SMSU Jazz Ensemble, April 27; and the SMSU Symphonic Chamber Winds, April 28.

Monty Python’s Spamalot will be performing April 24-25 and April 30-May 2. The play is a collaboration between the SMSU and Marshall High School theatre programs. SMSU will be the site of the play the first week, and it will be hosted at the high school on the second week.

Students play a big part in the Fine Arts Celebration and will be featured throughout. Forensics team members will give presentations at the Spring Forensics Showcase April 14; students will create theatre costumes during the Fashion Runway competition April 15; student recitals will be held on April 13 and 20; students will give presentations about theatre history on April 16-17; the Drama Club’s annual Playwriting Festival is April 18; a reception for Art and Graphic Design students showing their work in the Whipple Gallery will be April 18; Communication Studies senior project presentations will be April 20 and 27.

SMSU students and alumni will read Theatre Professor Emeritus William Hezlep’s play, Murder at Midnight, on April 8.

A reception for the Whipple Scholarship winner will be held on April 13.

SMSU senior Art & Graphic Design students will be displayed from April 17 through May 6 in the Whipple Gallery.

SMSU voice students and faculty will present an opera workshop on April 18.

The Marshall Area Story Tellers (MAST) will give a presentation on May 1.

The Fine Arts Celebration is sponsored by the Department of Fine Arts and Communication, the Creative Writing Program and the English Department.
