10th Annual Fine Arts Celebration Planned

There will be something for everyone at the tenth annual Fine Arts Celebration, being held April 4 through May 7 at Southwest Minnesota State University.

     Vocal and instrumental concerts, theatre productions, readings, student videos, art displays, costume making and more are on the schedule.

“This is a way to highlight the fine work of our talented students and faculty,” said event coordinator Dr. Pat Brace. “The majority of the events are free to the public and we invite people to check the schedule and come to campus for some of the events.”

     SMSU English Professor Susan McLean will read for their work on April 7. Dan Wahl will have a poetry reading on April 13.

     A number of concerts are planned, including: Southwest Minnesota Orchestra annual Children’s Concert, April 12; Men’s Glee Club & Bella Voce, April 14; SMSU Jazz Ensemble, April 18; SMSU/Community Concert Band, April 21; David Shaffer-Gottschalk, April 23; SMSU Symphonic Chamber Winds, April 25; SMSU Chorale, April 26; and the Southwest Minnesota Orchestra, May 1.

     The Weir by Conor McPherson will be performed by the Drama Club April 28 through May 1 in the Black Box Theatre. In addition, The Tempest by William Shakespeare will be performed in the Fine Arts Theatre on April 7-9 and April 15-17.

     Students play a big part in the Fine Arts Celebration and will be featured throughout. Students will create theatre costumes during the seventh annual Fashion Runway competition April 11; student recitals will be held on April 13, 20 and 27; senior art reviews will be April 22; a reception for Art and Graphic Design students showing their work in the Whipple Gallery will be April 23; Communication Studies senior project presentations will be April 18 and 25; and the SMSU Media Film Festival is April 27.

     A reception for the Whipple Scholarship winner, Rita Fonder, will be held on Wednesday, April 20.

     An Art Faculty Show will be in the William Whipple Gallery from April 4-15. SMSU senior Art & Graphic Design students will display their work from April 18 through May 2 in the Whipple Gallery.

Pat Brace, a talented jewelry maker, will have her work displayed in the Library Plaza from April 4-May 7.

     The Fine Arts Celebration is sponsored by the Department of Fine Arts and Communication, the Creative Writing Program and the English Department.
