Three high-achieving high school seniors were recently awarded full-ride scholarships to Southwest Minnesota State University as part of the President’s Regional Scholars program.

Alondra Leon Flores from Worthington High School, Rebecca Cheadle from Fulda High School, and Brianna Kinsinger from Luverne High School will receive full-ride scholarships as they start their college careers at SMSU in the Fall Semester 2025. The full-ride scholarships are for four years.

The 2025 Full-Ride Recipients:

Alondra Leon Flores is the daughter of Maria Flores Marin and Juan Leon Islas of Worthington, Minn. She plans to major in Biology and participate in SMSU’s Forensics team.
“I have become more certain that healthcare is where I want to dedicate my work. After I complete my biology degree, I hope to continue my education in a physician’s assistant program.”
Rebecca Cheadle is the daughter of Aaron and Laura Cheadle of Fulda, Minn. She plans to major in English so she can pursue a career in journalism. She also plans to participate in the SMSU Track and Field team.
“I have committed to the track team, high jump particularly. I also plan to audition for some of the various arts programs, such as choir and theatre.”
Brianna Kinsinger is the daughter of Shawn and Teresa Kinsinger of Luverne, Minn. She plans to major in Music Education and minor in Theatre or Psychology.
“I would like to be able to get my teaching license in both vocal and instrumental education and become a high school band director or an elementary music teacher.”

The students were selected through a combination of their outstanding academic achievements and interviews with SMSU faculty, staff, and finally individual interviews with President Kumara Jayasuriya. Launched in 2019, the President’s Regional Scholars program features six scholarship levels that range from $2,000 to a full ride over four years.

“The Regional Scholars program was created to bring the best and brightest students from the area to SMSU,” said President Jayasuriya. “Year after year, I am delighted by the caliber of students we have competing for these scholarships. And again, I was incredibly impressed when I met with each of them one-on-one. We are excited to have them join the Mustang Family this fall.”
