SMSU Theatre Program Renamed Entertainment & Theatre Arts
Southwest Minnesota State University (SMSU) has officially changed the name of its Theatre Program to Entertainment & Theatre Arts, reflecting the program’s expanded focus and commitment to preparing students for diverse careers in the performing arts.
The new name better represents the breadth of opportunities available to students, including acting, directing, design, costuming, and playwriting, while embracing the growing entertainment industry beyond traditional theatre.1
“This change reflects who we are and where we’re going," said Professor of Theatre and Costume Designer Sheila Tabaka. “Our students are not only learning stagecraft—they’re gaining skills that apply to film, television, and live entertainment. The new name captures that versatility.”
Professor Nadine Purvis Schmidt, who helped guide the transition, added: “We wanted a name that speaks to creativity and opportunity. Entertainment & Theatre Arts opens doors for students to imagine careers in multiple areas of the arts, while still honoring our strong theatre tradition.”
The program continues to offer a comprehensive curriculum, hands-on experience in SMSU’s state-of-the-art facilities—including the recently renovated proscenium theatre and Black Box Theatre—and participation in regional and national festivals.
