Dr. Anton Treuer to Speak at SMSU on Jan. 27

Southwest Minnesota State University will welcome acclaimed author and cultural preservationist Dr. Anton Treuer (pronounced troy-er) to campus on Tuesday, January 27, 2026, for programming on Native American heritage and dialogue on race and culture.

Dr. Anton Treuer is Professor of Ojibwe at Bemidji State University and author of many books. He is building an Ojibwe teacher training program at Bemidji State University, and his equity, education, and cultural work has put him on a path of service around the nation and the world. 

Dr. Treuer, author of the widely praised book Everything You Wanted to Know About Indians But Were Afraid to Ask, will share insights from his work and his lifelong commitment to preserving the Ojibwe language and culture.

The day’s programming includes:

  • Campus Program at 1:30 p.m. is open to SMSU students and employees.
  • Book Signing at 5:00 p.m. and an Evening Presentation at 6:00 p.m. in the Upper Conference Center at SMSU are both free and open to the public.

Dr. Treuer’s presentation will explore themes from his book, address common questions about Native American identity, and highlight efforts to sustain Indigenous languages and traditions.
