Southwest Minnesota Orchestra Presents “J.S. Bach and Co.” Concerto da Camera with Guest Artist Maria Jette

The Southwest Minnesota Orchestra invites audiences to an evening of chamber music with J.S. Bach and Co., a Concerto da Camera celebrating the music of Johann Sebastian Bach and composers closely connected to his musical legacy. The concert will be held Saturday, March 28, at 7:00 p.m. at First Lutheran Church, 100 Church Street, Marshall.

The program features works by J.S. Bach, Johannes Brahms, and Felix Mendelssohn, highlighting the artistic relationships and influences that shaped some of the most enduring music of the classical canon.

Special guest artist Maria Jette, mezzo-soprano, joins the orchestra for this performance. Jette brings a distinguished national career to the Marshall stage, with appearances alongside ensembles including the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra, Minnesota Orchestra, Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra, Houston Symphony, and New York Chamber Symphonies. Locally, she is a familiar presence with VocalEssence, the Chamber Music Society of Minnesota, and Lyra Baroque Orchestra, and she was a longtime guest on A Prairie Home Companion.

The evening opens with Bach’s Orchestral Suite No. 3 in D Major, BWV 1068, featuring the beloved Air on the G String. Selections continue with Brahms’ Zwei Gesänge für Alto, Bratsche und Klavier (Two Songs for Alto, Viola and Piano), Op. 91, performed by Maria Jette with Sean Flynn, viola, and Daniel Rieppel, piano.

A special conversation with Maria Jette and Daniel Rieppel will explore the remarkable connections between Brahms, violinist Joseph Joachim, and Joachim’s wife Amalie Schneeweiss-Joachim—a celebrated 19th-century vocalist and a pioneering figure in music history, highlighted in recognition of Women’s History Month.

Concert Program Highlights:

  • Orchestral Suite No. 3 in D Major, BWV 1068 — J.S. Bach
  • Zwei Gesänge für Alto, Bratsche und Klavier, Op. 91 — Johannes Brahms
  • Zu Dir, Jehovah! — J.S. Bach
