Southwest Minnesota State University has received a historic $5.5 million leadership gift from the Schwan's Corporate Giving Foundation to support the development of the Southwest Minnesota Indoor Sports and Recreation Dome. The gift represents the largest single gift in the university's history.

The transformational commitment moves the dome project significantly closer to reality and reflects a shared vision of expanding opportunities for wellness, recreation, athletics, and community engagement across Southwest Minnesota.

Announced by SMSU President David Jones at the State of the University address on Friday, Oct. 2, the gift represents a major investment in both the university and the region the institution serves.

"Today, we celebrate a truly transformational investment in the future of Southwest Minnesota State University and our region," Jones said. "Through this generous leadership commitment from the Schwan's Corporate Giving Foundation, we are taking a major step toward making the Southwest Minnesota Indoor Sports and Recreation Dome a reality. This extraordinary gift reflects a shared belief in the power of education, wellness, and community and represents not only a remarkable investment in Southwest Minnesota, but also the largest gift in the history of our university."

The Schwan's Corporate Giving Foundation has a longstanding history of supporting initiatives that strengthen communities and create opportunities for people of all ages. Its leadership investment in the dome project reflects a commitment to enhancing quality of life throughout Southwest Minnesota.

"Knowing this is the largest gift in the history of Southwest Minnesota State University carries a certain weight," said Theresa Zaske, Community Relations Manager at CJ Schwan’s Company and secretary of the Schwan's Corporate Giving Foundation. "We do not take that responsibility lightly. We believe in the impact this facility can have on the region, and we're proud to invest in something that will serve people of all ages while strengthening the future of Southwest Minnesota."

Once completed, the Southwest Minnesota Indoor Sports and Recreation Dome will provide expanded opportunities for SMSU students through recreation, health and wellness programs, athletic development, and campus engagement. The facility will also serve as a regional asset, offering year-round space for youth sports, camps, tournaments, community walking programs, fitness activities, and special events.

"This is a transformational moment for SMSU and the region," said Nathan Polfliet, Vice President for Advancement and Executive Director of the SMSU Foundation. "The Schwan's Corporate Giving Foundation has demonstrated extraordinary leadership through this historic commitment. Their investment will create opportunities that extend far beyond our campus, benefiting students, families, and communities throughout Southwest Minnesota."

The indoor dome project is envisioned as a regional destination that will enhance recreational opportunities, support economic activity, and strengthen connections among communities across Southwest Minnesota.

“Simply put, this is a game-changer for our region, community, SMSU, and all Mustangs! Tremendous alignment has been evident at every step, with an emphasis on how impactful this will be,” said Travis Whipple, vice president for athletics at SMSU. “We will look back on today as one of those defining moments in our history. One that propelled the Mustangs to new heights and helped us reach for more. We are incredibly grateful for this generous support and belief in our future.”

The Southwest Minnesota Indoor Sports and Recreation Dome is being developed to serve both SMSU and the broader region by providing year-round indoor space for athletic competition, recreation, wellness programming, community events, camps, and youth activities. The facility is intended to address growing regional needs for accessible indoor recreational space while enhancing opportunities for students and community members alike.

"On behalf of Southwest Minnesota State University and the SMSU Foundation, we extend our deepest gratitude to the Schwan's Corporate Giving Foundation for its partnership, leadership, and belief in the future of this project," Jones said. "Their generosity will help create a lasting legacy that serves students and communities in the region.”

While the $5.5 million commitment from the Schwan's Corporate Giving Foundation represents a significant portion of the project's fundraising goal, additional philanthropic and community support will be needed to bring the Southwest Minnesota Indoor Sports and Recreation Dome to completion. University leaders hope the historic leadership gift will inspire others to join in investing in a facility that will serve students, families, organizations, and communities throughout the region. Individuals, businesses, and organizations interested in supporting the project are encouraged to contact the SMSU Foundation for more information about giving opportunities. www.SMSUFoundation.org
