The SMSU Creative Writing and English Program hosts prominent authors on campus as part of its ongoing Visiting Writers Series. This semester, SMSU will host Kyle Minor for a public reading on Thursday, Nov. 5, 2026, at 7:00 pm in Charter Hall 201.
Minor, an acclaimed fiction writer, will read from his latest book of essays How to Disappear and Why. Drawing on a wide range of cultural, historical, spiritual, and philosophical figures and ideas, Minor assembles a collection of essays centered on the different concepts of disappearance. From subjects like ghosts to lost temples, and professional erasure to strategic exile, these essays dig deep into the cultural and historical archives of our civilization.

His stories and essays appear online and in print in Esquire, The Atlantic, Iowa Review, Salon, The Nation, Best American Nonrequired Reading, Best American Mystery Stories, and The New York Times Book Review. He lives in Indianapolis, Ind.
The Visiting Writers Series is coordinated by Jessie Hennen, Director of Creative Writing and Literature at SMSU. The reading is free and open to the public. This reading has been made possible by the voters of Minnesota through a grant from the Minnesota State Arts Board, thanks to a legislative appropriation from the arts and cultural heritage fund.
