Posted from Thursday, September 09, 2021 through Thursday, September 23, 2021

Southwest Minnesota State University is excited to welcome 421 new first-year students to campus this fall. The class represents an increase of 20 percent over the previous year. It also represents the second year in a row that SMSU has seen double-digit enrollment growth in new entering students. SMSU is the only four-year institution in the Minnesota State system to show an increase over last year.

Overall enrollment of degree-seeking students grew to 2,491, an increase of nearly 3 percent, according to 10-day enrollment statistics.

“We are very pleased to welcome another strong recruiting class to SMSU,” said President Kumara Jayasuriya. “I want to thank all of our employees for the excellent work they have done to make SMSU the school of choice for this large and diverse group of students. I also want to thank our community partners for the opportunities and support they provide our students.”

Adding to the positive enrollment news is the addition of over 66 first-year international students. An MBA cohort of 17 students from Taiwan is also attending SMSU, and with additional transfer students, there are over 90 new international students on campus this fall.

The 2021-22 numbers show a continuing upward trend in enrollment at SMSU. This can be attributed to a host of new academic programs, national recognition for affordability and return on investment, a 99 percent employment rate, the safest campus in Minnesota, and a continued commitment to being a diverse, inclusive university.
