StarID Password Requirements Have Changed: More Secure, Fewer Interruptions
Protecting student and employee accounts and data from security threats while keeping you connected remains a top priority. On October 1, the Minnesota State System Office updated StarID password requirements to keep everyone more secure while reducing the need for regular password changes.
While new passwords must be longer and stronger, the extra protection means you won’t be interrupted to change it again unless you experience an account or security issue. Previously, you needed to change your password every 180 days.
What’s New:
- Your current password will remain valid until its next expiration date (180 days after your last password change).
- The next time you change your password, it must meet the new requirements:
- Be between 15–128 characters long.
- Include at least three of the following: uppercase letters, lowercase letters, numbers, or special characters.
- Not have been used previously.
- Not contain your first or last name if the name is longer than two characters.
- After that, regularly scheduled password changes will no longer be required, unless a password reset is needed for another reason.
