Department of Agriculture, Culinology and Hospitality Management

SMSU’s Department of Agriculture, Culinology® and Hospitality Management (or ACHM) is comprised of students, faculty and staff who pursue educational opportunities ‘from the farm to the fork.’

We offer valuable bachelor degree programs in:

  • Agribusiness Management
  • Agronomy
  • Agricultural Solutions
  • Agriculture (transfer program for AS or AAS grads)
  • Agricultural Education (Teacher Licensure Program)
  • Agricultural Communication and Leadership
  • Culinology®
  • Hospitality Management

We additionally provide minors in Agribusiness Management, Agronomy, Agricultural Economics, and Hotel/Lodging Management.

ACHM students’, faculty and staff accomplishments

We are proud of our ACHM students’, faculty and staff accomplishments during the past year.  Some highlights include:

  • Two teams of SMSU Culinology® students were awarded first and second place at the Research Chefs Association (RCA) international competition held in Savannah, Georgia in March 2018.
  • More than 700 FFA Students visited our campus for this year’s Ralco/SMSU Ag Bowl Scholarship Invitational; thirty different FFA teams competed in fifteen (15) Career Development Events (CDE’s) in February 2018.
  • SMSU Students Jakob Hicks and Cameron Henning, guided by SMSU Agronomy Professor Lee French presented their field trial research at the International Host Plant Resistance (IHPR) Conference in March in England The students’ topics included corn rootworm research, and measuring natural pest resistance in yellow corn and red corn.
  • During Summer 2018, four SMSU students were awarded the opportunity of participating in MAELC Internships: Emily Amundson - Tracy-Area and Russell-Tyler-Ruthton School Districts; Ashley Eisenbraun - MACCRAY School System; Donavan Phoenix - Sleepy-Eye School District; and MacKenzie Schultz – Medford and Sibley-East School System.
  • We cooperated with Central Lakes College, Minnesota West Community and Technical College and Riverland Community College to articulate the efficient transfer of credits from these two-year agriculture degree programs into SMSU’s four-year agriculture programs. We are also working alongside St. Paul College and Normandale Community College to connect their two-year culinary and hospitality degree programs to SMSU’s four-year degrees in Culinology® and Hospitality Management.
