Hospitality Management


The Hospitality Management bachelor’s degree is broad-based in design and includes studies in hotel administration, event planning and management, and culinary management. This four-year program prepares students for positions in hotels, restaurants, resorts and other hospitality and recreational facilities. Our students select a concentration in Culinary Management, Hotel Administration, or Event Planning and Management as part of their degree. All three concentrations provide ample opportunity for the hospitality professionals of tomorrow to build upon their leadership and management abilities, critical thinking skills, problem solving techniques, strong financial analysis skills and customer awareness.

The Culinary Management concentration prepares graduates for positions as supervising chefs in hotels, restaurants, clubs and resorts, cafes and eateries, hospitals, catering companies, and more. This concentration will allow students with a passion for culinary arts to obtain a baccalaureate degree and advance professionally in the future.

The Event Planning and Management concentration prepares graduates for employment in the meeting, convention and event planning field. Students are prepared for careers as Entertainment Venue Manager, Wedding Sales Manager, Executive Conference Manage, Convention and Meeting Manager, etc. in a wide range of industries, such as:

  • Business, professional, labor and political organizations
  • Hotels and motels
  • Other support services, including trade show organizers
  • Self-employed
  • Colleges, universities and professional schools


Career opportunities include being a Food Service Manager, Guest Services Manager, Catering Coordinator, Event Planner, Production Manager, Restaurant Manager, Dining Room Manager, Sous Chef, Assistant Housekeeping Director and Food & Beverage Manager.

Average wage for meeting and convention planners in the US is $24.21/hour (ISEEK, 2013). This concentration prepares students with skills needed to plan conferences, weddings, reunions and more.

The Hotel Administration concentration focuses on contemporary issues related to strategic management in the lodging industry. This concentration develops a solid management philosophy with an emphasis in revenue management and prepares graduates for bright and rewarding careers in the lodging industry. Graduates can attain entry-level employment in management trainee and supervisory positions at hotels, public institutions and private clubs, with the opportunity for advancement to upperlevel management positions. Employers such as TPI Hospitality, ARAMARK, Holiday Inn, Madison Hospitality, Regency Management, Hilton Hotels, and Caesar’s Palace hire SMSU students for paid internships. Additionally, our Industry Advisory Board consists of representatives from Fortune 500 companies such as Ecolab, TPI Hospitality, UniPro Foodservice, General Mills, Land O’Lakes, Hormel, Madison Hospitality, and InterContinental Hotels Group. The Board members are committed to ensuring that SMSU graduates are among the best in the country, and offer their experience and networking experience to help SMSU graduates secure a job upon graduation. This program can give you management skills that are valuable in any business, not just Hospitality Management. Your teachers are very focused and highly motivated to help you succeed. Our faculty has years of experience in the hospitality industry. Their enthusiasm, dedication and knowledge motivates our students to achieve at higher levels.


Hospitality Management students have the opportunity to be involved with collaborative activities such as attending the International Hotel, Motel, and Restaurant Show in NYC and the National Restaurant Association (NRA) Show in Chicago. Students also participate in student or professional associations providing learning opportunities outside the classroom, such as the Student Hospitality Opportunities Club. Hospitality Management students are also involved in a wide variety of University and community events, such as the University Gala and the Interactive Dinner, and participate in handson demonstrations with visiting guest chefs.

Salaries vary greatly depending on the segment of the business and the experience of each graduate. Average entry-level salaries range from $30,000 to $35,000 per year. Experience, location, and organizational structure will directly impact salaries. Opportunities for advancement exist in virtually every segment of the hospitality industry with corresponding salaries.


Students gain hands-on experience in SMSU’s newly renovated kitchen laboratories, while catering special events on and off campus. The Hospitality Management program is housed in the Individualized Learning (IL) building on SMSU’s campus.
