MN NES/MTLE Info, Lesson Plans, and Livetext guides
The Professional Educator Licensing and Standards Board (PELSB) is responsible for overseeing the teacher testing requirements set forth in Minnesota statute and is continually monitoring and analyzing the testing program.
Teachers in Minnesota are required to demonstrate competency on a series of tests in reading, writing, math, pedagogy, and licensure field specific content knowledge.
Minnesota Teacher Licensure Examinations (MTLE)
- All Pedagogy subtests require a passing score of 240 (on a scale of 200-300).
- All Content Area subtests require a passing score of 240 (on a scale of 200-300).
- All MN NES Essential Academic Skills (EAS) subtests require a passing score of 520 (on a scale of 400-600).

Minnesota NES Essential Academic Skills (EAS)
Effective June 8, 2016, the MTLE Basic Skills Test was discontinued. It was replaced by a
National Evaluation Series™ (NES®) assessment: Essential Academic Skills, effective August
30, 2016. The NES Essential Academic Skills exams consisting of reading, writing, and mathematics is required for Tier 3 licensed teachers to move to Tier 4 licensure. More information can be found here.

Livetext guides
IMPORTANT - when setting up your Livetext account, make sure to use your FirstName.LastName@my.smsu.edu email account as the primary email; using any other email address can cause the Field Experience Module (FEM) to have problems in connecting you to SMSU. To change your email address in Livetext, log into your account; go under 'My Account' in the far upper right corner. Scroll down to your Membership info where your email is listed, and click on 'Edit' - then make any changes needed, and click on Save and Submit.
