Self-Study Process

The creation of the SMSU Self-Study began with the appointment of a Self-Study Coordinator and Steering Committee, followed by Criterion Teams and other committees. These groups conducted a thorough analysis of the University's efforts towards the five criteria for continuing accreditation:

  • Mission
  • Integrity: Ethical and Responsible Conduct
  • Teaching and Learning: Quality, Resources, and Support
  • Teaching and Learning: Evaluation and Improvement
  • Resources, Planning, and Institutional Effectiveness

University constituents had many opportunities to contribute to the self-study process. Steering Committee and criterion team members were selected to represent broad categories from across the institution, with membership from all bargaining units and students included. Students were nominated by any campus member to serve on the criterion teams. A survey was conducted by the Steering Committee in Spring of 2013 to solicit feedback from students, alumni, employers, community members, faculty, and staff and administration. SMSU facilitated the HLC Survey of students in early August of 2014.

Each of the five criteria chapters were reviewed not only by the teams and Steering Committee but at all-University discussions set aside for them. Feedback was also encouraged to be submitted online.

In addition, SMSU has promoted the third-party comment process as required by HLC. Any person interested in commenting on the University directly to HLC, before the review team visits campus in October, may do so through September 20, 2014. The third-party comment link is available on SMSU's HLC Accreditation main page.
