Commemorative Seed Information

Delegates and special guests received a commemorative seed packet. This mix of grasses and wildflowers is native to the prairies of the Central Plains; however, any zone with moderate moisture would find success with this seed mix. The mix is intended for a habitat with a well-balanced moisture supply. This mix would not thrive in a desert or tropical climate. However, with a good potting soil and care, you might find success with your seed mix grown in a container to enjoy your own bit of prairie on a deck or patio. The sample seed packet covers approximately one square foot... a universe to the prairie eye.

"the prairie eye looks at a square foot and sees a universe... "
– Bill Holm, "Horizontal Grandeur" from The Music of Failure

Here are some basic instructions for growing your prairie grasses and wildflowers:

Plan

Check for your last frost date and plant after this has passed.
Choose a spot on your property that gets 6 or more hours of direct sunlight a day.
Prepare your soil be clearing the area of all existing growth. Simply dig up everything that is growing, turn the soil and rake the area flat.

Plant

Mix the seeds with a little bit of sand for better visibility and scatter the seeds by hand directly on top of the soil.
Lightly compress the seeds into the soil, making sure not to bury them too deeply.

Grow

Water so that the soil is moist, not soaking wet, until the seedlings are about 4-6" tall. After that, the seedlings will survive on natural rains. If you are experiencing very dry weather, water occasionally.
