Scaling Up College Completion Efforts for Student Success (SUCCESS)

SUCCESS stands for Scaling Up College Completion Efforts for Student Success. This initiative is a national effort to improve completion rates at colleges and universities by serving students from historically underserved populations from admission through degree completion.

Thanks to the support of Minnesota State and MDRC, a nonprofit research organization that leads the national SUCCESS network, SMSU has been selected as a grant recipient and pilot campus for SUCCESS beginning Fall. Check out SMSU Today's press release announcing the exciting news by clicking here.

As an added benefit, this initiative also aligns with Minnesota State’s Equity 2030 goal to eliminate equity gaps in educational outcomes by race, generation, and socioeconomic status by the year 2030.

  • Proactive Coaching – A SUCCESS Coach will meet regularly in-person or virtually with participants to provide proactive and holistic coaching i.e. study tips, academic assistance, life skills, and ongoing encouragement.

  • Financial Incentives – A monthly financial incentive ($50) for students who participate and meet program requirements to help them meet basic financial needs.

  • Academic Momentum - SUCCESS requires students to earn a minimum of 24 credits each year through full-time enrollment (including summer if applicable). Students will also have access to activities, events, and resources tailored to maximize their success.

  • Degree or certificate-seeking student
  • New first-year or new transfer student (60 or fewer cumulative college credits applied in transfer evaluation)
  • One or more of the following: pell eligible, student of color, or first generation
  • Completed FAFSA application
  • Not already a participant in other TRIO best practice programs i.e. Access Opportunity Success, Mustang Pathway, Pathway Scholars, etc.
