Graduate Credit Opportunities for Teachers

HLC Requirements

In 2015, the Higher Learning Commission (HLC) revised the Assumed Practice B.2 to assure academic quality of courses being offered by accredited institutions.  This policy requires that faculty teaching general education courses, or other non-occupational courses, hold a master’s degree or higher in the discipline or subfield. If a faculty member holds a master’s degree or higher in a discipline or subfield other than that in which he or she is teaching, that faculty member should have completed a minimum of 18 graduate credit hours in the discipline or subfield in which they teach.

The date of compliance for this policy is September 1, 2022.

These initiatives were developed as a result of state legislative efforts to reduce or eliminate the cost of concurrent enrollment teachers pursing graduate coursework within their discipline.  The intent of these initiatives is to help school districts and their teachers meet the HLC credentialing requirements that will take effect on September 1, 2022.
