Winter Festival Celebrated at SMSU

Southwest Minnesota State University will celebrate Winter Festival with a series of events Jan. 26-31, 2015. This year’s theme is “Channel Your Inner Flannel.”

Winter Festival, formerly known as Winter Meltdown, is an SMSU tradition, a time for students, faculty and staff to participate in fun activities to help beat the ‘winter blues.’

The week is culminated by the traditional Hawaiian Night basketball doubleheader on Saturday, Jan. 31 against Minnesota Duluth. The Mustang women play at 5 p.m., followed by the men at 7 p.m.

Daniel Martin will present his mentalist act Tuesday, Jan. 27 in the lower level Conference Center beginning at 9 p.m.

The “Nearly Naked Mile” clothing donation run will take place on Thursday, Jan. 29. Students are encouraged to bring clothes to donate and then run or walk the chilly route around campus. Registration will be at 7 p.m. in the R/A Facility lobby with the race starting at 7:30 p.m. at the R/A spine.

Other events this year include the opportunity for students to participate in the Yik Yak Take Over; Minnesota West salon and massage students giving haircuts, massages and manicures; Live at the Landing musical entertainment; movies; and a chance for students to make their own leis. T-shirts will also be sold for $5 in the lower level Student Center from 11 a.m. – 1 p.m. thru Thursday or until sold out.

Monday, Jan. 26: Beard Contest Final Photos, Student Center Lower Level, 11 a.m.-1:30 p.m. Before and after photos will be posted on Facebook and the most Likes wins!

Tuesday, Jan. 27: Yik Yak Take Ever, watch for information on Facebook. Mentalist Daniel Martin, Conference Center Lower Level, 9 p.m.

Wednesday, Jan. 28: Spa Day, Minnesota West Pipestone Salon Crew, Student Center upper level, 9:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m. Relax Crew, 2 aqua massage beds, Oxygen Bar and Calf Massagers, Student Center Lower Level West Entrance, 10 a.m.- 2 p.m. Movie, “Dumb and Dumber To,” Student Center lower level TV lounge, 6:30 and 9 p.m.

Thursday, Jan. 29: Make Your Own Leis, Student Center Lower Level, 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Live at the Landing entertainment, 11:45 a.m.-12:45 p.m. Nearly Naked Mile, R/A Facility lobby, 7 p.m. registration, 7:30 p.m. race.

Friday, Jan. 30: Women’s and men’s basketball vs. St. Cloud State, 6 and 8 p.m. Mustang Wrestling vs. Upper Iowa, PE Gym, 7 p.m. Movie, “Dumb and Dumber To,” Student Center lower level TV lounge, 6:30 and 9 p.m.

Saturday, Jan. 31: Hawaiian Night. Women’s and men’s basketball vs. Minnesota Duluth, 5 and 7 p.m.

Prospective students are also invited to campus for an open house program from 1-3:30 p.m. on Jan. 31. The program calls for an admission presentation, Student Services Fair, student/parent panel sessions and a campus tour.
