FFA Culinary Skills Competition Feb. 20

Published Monday, February 02, 2015

Southwest Minnesota State University will host an FFA culinary skills competition on Feb. 20.

Twenty-three school districts will send high school teams to campus that day, with competition beginning at 7:30 a.m., said Assistant Professor of Culinology Dr. Mark Traynor.

Teams will give an oral presentation, will take a 50-question food science test, participate in two sensory evaluation exercises and will create a fruit and nut bar, based on the General Mills Larabar, the sponsor of the event.

The school districts are from as close as Wabasso and as far away as Detroit Lakes and Staples Motley. “There’s quite a broad spectrum of schools that will be here,” said Traynor. “It’s a good way to host a major event which helps with the education of the students and to expose them to our Culinology program and our facilities at the same time.”
