About Dr. David P. Jones

Interim President of Southwest Minnesota State University

Dr. David Jones has recently taken on the role of interim president at Southwest Minnesota State University (SMSU). With over 32 years of experience in higher education, he is dedicated to enhancing student success, institutional effectiveness, and community engagement.

A third-generation educator, Dr. Jones began his career as a social studies teacher. His aspiration for further education led him to earn a master’s degree at the University of Nebraska at Kearney. Initially planning to return to the classroom, Dr. Jones found his passion for higher education administration after serving as a graduate student and hall director. In his 32nd year in higher education, he has held various leadership positions at the College of William and Mary, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, University of Alabama, and at a sister institution within the Minnesota State system. He recognizes that his previous roles equipped him with unique insights, with each step preparing him for this interim position.

Known for his collaborative leadership approach, Dr. Jones emphasizes the importance of open communication and partnerships among faculty, staff, and students. He is committed to fostering an inclusive environment and is keen to learn from the community.

Dr. Jones prioritizes student engagement and recruitment over his interim year. He also underscores the importance of creating a welcoming campus atmosphere and fostering a vibrant campus culture. His experience in residential life has provided him with valuable insights into building connections with students, and he aims to make a meaningful impact on their lives.
