Sociology Program Student Learning Outcomes

(adapted from American Sociological Association guidelines for the Sociological Literacy Framework, 2017) 

Upon completion of SMSU’s sociology degree, students in sociology will:  

  1. Sociological Perspective: Apply sociological concepts and theories to understand social phenomena in everyday life. 
  2. Stratification and Social Inequality: Analyze the impact of differences among individuals and groups (race, class, gender, age, etc.). 
  3. Research Methods and Data Literacy: Identify and apply the characteristics of high-quality data and methods in sociological research. 
  4. Communicate Sociological Knowledge: Critically evaluate and communicate explanations of human behavior and social patterns using sociological reasoning and evidence-based analysis.
